YABBY LAKE SINGLE BLOCK RELEASES
In August the team was fortunate enough to catch up with
Tom Carson at
Embrasse in Carlton, to look at the stellar range of Estate and Single Vineyard wines from
Yabby Lake. It is not too much of a stretch to say that these are the best wines Tom has made, and we got very excited about how good they look today, and also how well structured the wines are. It seems a healthy future for the wines is assured, the trick will be to either find them, or if you do, then keeping your hands off them. They truly are delicious.
Here are the my notes without scores, as taken on the day.
2009 Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Chardonnay700 doz
12.2% alc/vol
RRP - $44 Served very chilled, yet showing great personality straight away; big impact, a really expressive and savoury bouquet, pure grapefruit, lemon rind and grilled cashew, love the bacon bones complexity as well; the palate is taut, refined and precise on entry, opening to a full range of pure Chardonnay flavours; long and expressive and in the slot. Not enough made.
2009 Yabby Lake Single Block 1 Chardonnay948 bottles
12.2% alc/vol
RRP - $7550/50 P58 and Mendoza
Not a lot of new oak, more ripeness, more grapefruit and a little straw; the palate though is much tighter and taut, more straw and mineral and even a little green apple acidity; really lovely line and thrust, excellent flavour, not as generous as the single vineyard, but over time reveals a little more toast.
2009 Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Pinot Noir700 cases
10% Whole Bunch
13.5% alc/vol
RRP - $58Bright cherry red; bright and focused red cherry fruit with a savoury backbone of bacon bones, mineral and fine Asian spices; the palate is fine and fragrant, refined, restrained and poised; long and moving into ethereal levels, super silky too; simply delicious.
2009 Yabby Lake Block 2 Pinot Noir1300 bottles
20% Whole Bunch
RRP - $75More dark fruited in personality, lots of spice in this wine, really engaging and exotic; dark fruits, plummy, with a touch of cold tea and beautiful fine and silky tannins, certainly plenty of them, strong in structure, and more backward in personality; incredibly long and expansive; great depth here.
